According to recent studies, more than a hundred thousand dogs are killed in Indonesia each year for their meat. On the island of Bali, more than 70,000 dogs are butchered annually. With no laws banning cruelty to animals, there are a lot of people that breed dogs to sell them in the meat trade. Two dogs who were destined to be someone’s meal was saved when local residents took them from a senior man who was delivering them to a restaurant.
Tied to the back of a bike
Local residents noticed an old man who was holding on to an old bike next to a busy street. At the end of his bike are two sacks with a dog on each of them. The sacks were hanging on each side, and they each had holes were the dog’s snout was showing. Their snouts were tied to prevent them from barking and biting.
As people there knew that dogs were regularly sold and butchered, they automatically figured out what was happening. The older man was waiting for someone to take the dogs from him. They were ordered by a local restaurant to be served on their menu. Fortunately, someone took pity on the dogs.
Several people approached the men and offered him money for the dogs. At first, the old man resisted as somebody was already going to buy them. But they talked to the old man about compassion, and eventually, he relented. He sold the dogs to the men for 36 dollars.
The dog’s saviors then took the two to Rescue Bintaro Dog Lovers, a local non-profit rescue organization. In operation for several years now, the organization has saved tens of thousands of dogs and had found homes for many street dogs in Thailand. Currently, they are fostering 200 dogs in their shelter.
The dog rescue group happily took the dogs in and named them Jeni and Joni. Jeni, the smaller of the two, soon found her forever home. Joni, on the other hand, had to undergo some treatment first. He had blood parasites, which made him weak and sickly. But as soon as he is well, the rescue group will try to look for a home for him too.
