No one really expects a house dog to be adept at surviving in the wild, let alone guide another animal in doing so. Yet one pit bull named Ashlyn defied expectations when she became the guardian of a baby raccoon. This story goes into detail about how Ashlyn met this animal and how she become its mentor.
In June of 2021, a woman named Kate received a call from a friend about a raccoon stuck in a car tire. It was in bad shape and needed immediate care. Kate brought the animal to her house and gave it lots of food. Then after three days, it got better and was able to move around with ease.
When Ashlyn met the baby raccoon, she wanted to protect it. The pit bull had her eyes on the raccoon all the time, acting like its mother. Eventually, the dog successfully taught the raccoon how to sniff out objects and navigate through grassy fields.
The raccoon would enthusiastically follow Ashlyn eager to learn from her. The two animals would spend hours in a forest, exploring and playing. Kate was always there to supervise and make sure they don’t wander too far.
The pit bull knows how to adjust her behavior accordingly. Whenever she’s not playing with or teaching the raccoon, she would be her usual overly energetic self. However, if the raccoon is with her, she adopts a more serious demeanor.
Kate allows the raccoon to come and go as it pleases. Sometimes it would be gone for weeks and come back to stay with Ashlyn for months. Every time the raccoon returns, the pit bull would be welcoming and friendly.
Kate saw how both animals have learned from each other. The raccoon learned how to be self-sufficient while the dog became more patient and disciplined. Kate believed that the two animals wouldn’t have turned out that way if they never met each other.
