Meet 3-year-old Labrador-German Shepherd mix named Louis.
Louis did not have the luxury of a good, well-taken cared of life as he was neglected by his owners. When he had a serious eye infection, they had his eyes taken out instead of treating them. Then shortly after his surgery, the blind dog had been struck by a car that fractured his leg. Because of that, his owners found it difficult to take care of him any longer so they surrendered him to a shelter.
He was then rescued by Helen Woodward Animal Center, a non-profit organization based in San Diego County.
To help him recover and also learn the ropes of being blind, the center put him in a foster home. Then they also posted his story on different social media platforms which quickly became viral. And because of his heartbreaking story, the shelter received so much support and donations. Aside from that, they also received a lot of adoption applications for Louis.
Among the many who applied was a marine veteran named Steve Walker. He and his family initially did not plan to adopt one more dog but they were touched by his story especially because Steve personally suffered from Retinitis Pigmentosa. It was a rare eye disease that caused progressive vision loss and Steve started losing his sight when he was 18.
So, his daughter Jordan wrote a detailed essay about how they were the best family to adopt Louis. In the essay, she mentioned how their home was already well-adjusted to accommodate Steve’s blindness so Louis wouldn’t have so much difficulty with that. They also have other rescue animals like Dragon who was their rescue bulldog and their bunny Honey.
The rescue was convinced that this was the perfect family for Louis. So, they immediately contacted them and arranged the adoption. Not only did Louis get a forever home, but a good Samaritan also provided him with a free year of veterinary services as well as 10 training services sessions from San Diego Pet Training. In the adoption event, Steve spoke and thanked everyone who helped care for Louis.
Now, Louis will have the chance to live his best life with a loving family to take care of him.
