Sting the Greyhound loves to help children improve their reading skills. So when no one showed up to one of his library sessions one day, his owner posted photos of the lonesome pup on social media to encourage participation. Little did he know, the picture of the lonely pup touched the hearts of thousands of people across the country and started clamoring to cheer up the lonely pooch.
If you are worked up over the injustice, don’t worry, Sting’s owner, John Muellner, is quick to reassure the media that Sting is by no means a sad pup — his face just naturally looks like that. The 10-year-old Greyhound is a retired race dog and now works as a therapy dog in Minnesota’s White Bear Lake. Once a week, Sting lets kids read to him for the Paws to Read program at the city library. The program is an initiative that allows kids to practice their reading skills by reading to pups who don’t mind their mistakes.
Sting usually spends one hour at the library so that at least three kids can read to him for 20 minutes each. But that week, nobody showed up for the reading session.
According to Muellner, nobody signed up to read to Sting that night at the White Bear Lake library. However, Muellner encouraged people that if they knew four to eight-year-olds who would like to read to a dog, to please contact the library by phone or through their website.
Much to Muellner’s surprise, the phones started ringing non-stop. People are asking if they could hold the phone to Sting’s ear so that they can read to him. Even the whole staff of a Petco in California called in to say they love the adorable pup, Sting. The outpour of all the love and support was amazing.
Much to the librarian’s delight, Sting’s schedule is now booked for a couple of months, as are other resident reading dogs of Paws to Read.
