The bond between soldiers and their canine buddies is unbreakable. That is because, with all the challenges they’ve been through, their love for each other has already been proven.
One’s wound is also the ‘wound’ of the other as both of them face every pain together, and not one of them faces any challenges alone. This truth was what exactly happened to Sergeant Wes Brown when his K9 German Shepherd buddy, Isky, was caught in an explosion in one of their missions in Afghanistan.
The explosion hit the German Shepherd so hard that he suffered from a knee injury so severe that it broke six critical areas, which called for immediate surgery. He also had to get his broken knees pieced together specifically in Germany. But even though Isky had managed to survive the explosion and surgery, his life would never be the same again.
After the successful surgery, another blow hit the partners in crime. The dog’s doctors discovered through an MRI scan that Isky has a nerve Tumor. And they advised that Sergeant Brown has to painfully choose to have Isky’s leg be amputated so he can survive his condition.
AIt was heartbreaking news for Brown because he knows that his dog’s life would be completely altered after his second surgery. But the sergeant made a promise to himself that he won’t leave his beloved dog, no matter what happens. That is why he didn’t waste any time and began the paperwork to adopt Isky and bring him home officially.
And at last, after the challenges they have gone through, both of them were able to retire and return home to start a new life. Also, as fitting recognition for Isky’s heroic service, he was awarded Hometown Hero for VFW 7728 and became an official American Legion Post member. And while all these recognitions are truly prestigious, Isky is already satisfied and comforted that he can be with his beloved dad forever.
