Jeanie was a homeless five-month-old puppy when a good samaritan saw her running with a pack of dogs. The good samaritan brought her to a local vet office where she works. The vet noticed that the dog had a crippled front leg, which was inconvenient, so she removed it. Later on, Jeanie was adopted by her mom Lydia Crochet.
Lydia observed that even at a young age, Jeanie was already great at sensing people’s feelings. She knows when her parents had a bad day, and she is always there to cheer them up. Even friends and relatives who came to visit Lydia noticed that Jeanie is good with people. They suggested having Jeanie tested to be a therapy dog.
The three-legged Jeanie passed the therapy dog test with flying colors, and since then, she devoted her time to providing comfort to people experiencing difficult times. Now at 12 years old, Jeanie comforted several people in her lifetime, and she is glad to continue providing comfort to others. She works for the Children’s Advocacy Center, where she soothes children who need to be questioned by detectives in cases such as child abuse and violent crimes.
With Lydia, she also goes to nursing homes, hospitals, veterans’ homes, reading programs, and schools, making people happy just by being there. She is there for students during examination periods, and she also visits special education classes. And she also provides a joyful diversion to depressed veterans whenever she visits veterans’ homes.
Jeanie was also Lydia’s therapy dog went she underwent a double mastectomy. The loving dog never left her mom’s side during her recovery period, and Lydia thinks she recovered faster because Jeanie was there for her.
Despite having a disability, Jeanie is full of life and full of love to give to others. For all the love and comfort that she spreads around, especially for those who need them more, Jeanie is undoubtedly a hero dog. No wonder she is the recipient of the 2019 Therapy Hero Dog Awards from American Humane.
