While driving, Lisa Chiarelli, a dog rescuer, saw a black Pitbull amidst a garbage dump in Los Angeles. The rain was pouring down and the dog looked so lost that she stopped the car with the intention to get her. The dog came close but she did not get in the car because she seemed scared. She ran off somewhere instead.
Lisa drove around the vast recycling plant, but she could not find her. She could not get the dog out of her mind, so she went back the next day. She saw her again and started giving her food on that spot. The dog was not emaciated, so Lisa surmised that she had just been abandoned.
Lisa went back with a friend the next day. They brought a trap but they failed to catch her. After that, the dog did not want to go near her again. However, Lisa was worried about her and did not want to give up trying to rescue her.
Lisa kept going back to the dumpsite. She set up a feeding station and drove by several times a day just to check if the dog was still going back. After two weeks, she went back with her friend to set up a trap again. This time, they let her get used to the trap for several days by leaving food for her inside.
After 21 days, they finally caught her and brought her to the vet. Lisa sat with her for some time to help her relax because she was in a new place surrounded by strange people. Soon, she was letting them touch and pet her.
Over the next few days, Lisa would go back and bathe her or bring a cheeseburger. The dog started to look forward to seeing her and greeted her with a wag of her tail. Before the end of the week, she started playing with Lisa and giving her kisses.
A month after Lisa rescued the dog, she found a family who was interested in adopting her. Shelly’s family had a black Pitbull before and she was sure that the rest of the family would love her.
They named the dog Xena. It took a while for Xena to get used to her new home but when she started getting comfortable, they witnessed her cheerful and playful side. She was enjoying the good life in California by relaxing at home or going on trips to the park and the beach with her forever family.
