I am sure some of you will agree that the moniker – “man’s best friend” sometimes does not do justice to what dogs mean to us. They are family – plain and simple – and as family, we are there for them, and they are there for us.
Take, for example, the case of US Air Force Staff Sgt. Adam Wylie, a native of Bethel, Ohio, and his former partner, Emra, a 9-year-old retired military dog.
Sgt. Wylie was deployed to South Korea 25 days after her daughter was born. So you could imagine how lonely he was, leaving his wife and newborn daughter behind to serve our country.
Then came Emra. Sgt. Wylie was partnered up with Emra during his service in South Korea. They worked 12-hour shifts conducting security checks whenever military VIPs visited, including President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Emra is the first individual that Sgt. Adam Wylie came into contact with. Little did he know it was the beginning of a strong bond between them. He was being away from his family, Sgt. Wiley turned to Emra for emotional support, and Emra was more than willing to console the lonely new father.
Now that Emra has retired from military service, Sgt. Wylie has adopted her so that he can continue to show her the love and affection that she deserves for serving the American people and the companionship that she happily provided Sgt. Wylie during his dark and lonely days.
American Humane organized the reunion for the two veterans, which led Sgt. Wylie to shed tears once he saw Emra. They had been separated for three years, and now that they are back together, Sgt. Wylie has vowed to give Emra a happy life during her twilight years.
