Dogs are said to have a compelling sense of smell. They are even trained to detect cancer by some medical scientists. Amanda Evans-Nash had this same experience with her dog, Jimmy.
One day, while in bed with her arms raised, Amanda observed her dog jumping beside her and smelling her chest. She tried to push him away, but he was persistent. When Amanda tried to feel the spot where the dog was sniffing, she felt something hard. A lump was on the side of her breast near the armpit. It was something she had not noticed before.
She tried to look at herself in front of the mirror. She observed that the lump was quite visible if you look at it. As a healthy 50-year-old, she did not imagine getting sick with cancer. She automatically asked her doctor, who referred her to the hospital for further laboratory check-ups.
However, the hospital had a full schedule, so her boss told Amanda to go to another clinic instead. That same day, she got the news that she had breast cancer. She felt numb and could barely explain to her husband after she got the news. She also learned that there are different types of breast cancer. What she had is an uncommon type of cancer of the breast. It is the kind that still needs a lot of research.
Amanda’s carcinoma is quite aggressive and spreading fast. A biopsy done later further confirmed her condition – a triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer. The lime-sized tumor that she detected first was only the bigger one. There was another growth on top of the breast, and it was already creeping to her lymph nodes.
She underwent weeks of chemotherapy sessions, surgery, and more radiotherapy sessions. Doctors also took out 29 lymph nodes, which left her scarred. Luckily, all these paid off, and she was declared cancer-free.
She credits her dog for saving her. If it were not for her, Jimmy, she would not know her actual condition, and the cancer cells would have spread to more parts of her body. Now, Amanda actively promotes anti-cancer awareness and tells people how amazing her dog is.
