A four-year-old Giant Schnauzer named Bayou was named top dog in the 21st American Kennel Club National Championship. The pup made history by being the first of his breed to be win Best in Show in the competition presented by Royal Canin. Over five thousand dogs competed for the title.
Originally from Port Allen in Louisiana, Bayou resides with his handler Alfonso Escobedo in Houston, Texas. His owner Chris Reed said he did not have high expectations during the competition. Although the pup was exceptional, a Giant Schnauzer had never gotten the title before. According to Reed, they were only aiming to make the shortlist and maybe win the category for the breed.
Reed shared that when Bayou made the shortlist, everyone in the team relaxed a bit. When the time to award Best in Show came, Reed thought the pup had a shot at fourth place. When the fourth placer was announced, he felt it was already over for their team. He sat in disbelief when Bayou won the prize.
Bayou won $50,000 thanks to the efforts of Reed and Escobedo, who trained and groomed him. The pup, according to Reed, has gone a long way. He used to get kicked out of competitions when he was younger.
Reed said Giant Schnauzers are gregarious, protective, and loyal dogs. He went on to say that they are a thinking breed too. If one is ever in need of a ladder, they will volunteer in its place. They are, however, also known for being mischievous. During Bayou’s first competition, one of the judges booted him out because he would not stand still for judging.
Bayou did not get extra treats because he is still in training. But the good boy received more pets than usual in recognition of his growth and recent achievement.
