When we think about police dogs, we often imagine tough dogs that do their job very well. Police K9 units are well-disciplined dogs and are highly capable of catching criminals. They are very good at their jobs and they also need to have a certain temperament that can intimidate criminals and suspects.
These dogs are bred and trained to become police dogs. They’re expected to have the proper temperament to become an asset to the police force. However, nature has a funny way of letting us know that each creature is unique.
In Queensland, Australia, a German Shepherd puppy named Gavel was training to become part of an elite K9 unit for the Queensland police. Gavel was bred and raised to become a police dog and everyone expected him to become an exceptional police dog that will help the police in fighting crime. Unfortunately for Gavel’s trainers, no matter how hard they trained him, Gavel just didn’t have the right temperament or personality to become a police dog.
The police dog academy had no choice but to fail Gavel. However, Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey learned about Gavel and was a little sad that the puppy didn’t make the cut to become a police dog. So, Governor Paul de Jersey decided to give the puppy a job as the vice-regal dog in his residence.
Governor de Jersey mentioned that although Gavel missed out to become part of the police force, he certainly had qualities that made him a perfect candidate to become the official vice-regal dog of Queensland. When Gavel started his job, he was perfect for it. Gavel’s duties include welcoming guests in the residence and also attending official ceremonies.
While Gavel lacked the aggression to fight crime, his friendly nature made him great at his new job. Visitors love him and Gavel can’t get enough of the attention he gets from people. Gavel may have been fired for being too friendly but his qualities landed him an alternative but also a great job. Here’s an adorable video of how Gavel found the perfect job.
