The Peterson family had four dogs in their household in Miami, Florida. The youngest is a four-month-old German shepherd named Cedar. But in May 2017, somebody stole Cedar from their backyard.
They tried to look for the dog in the neighborhood, posted his picture, and hired a detective to track down their pet, but to no avail. It devastated the whole family. Even their other pet dogs felt the loss. Without any news at all, they were resigned to the fact that they will never see Cedar again.
In April 2019, Deputy Marshall Steve Ryan found a malnourished dog in a snowy ditch in rural Colorado. He had an injury in the leg. The police officer picked up the dog and brought him to the vet. In the clinic, they also found out that he has a microchip which says that he belongs to the Petersons.
The police called the Petersons in Miami to inform them about Cedar. They were shocked how Cedar found his way to Colorado! But they were very happy knowing that the dog they thought they would never see again is very much alive.
Cedar stayed for three weeks in a Colorado clinic to recuperate and get back to normal form. To get him back to Miami, a group named Wings for Rescue offered to give him a free airplane ride.
Wings for Rescue is an animal rescue group that flies at-risk animals from disaster zones and rescue canines from overcrowded shelters. They offered to fly Cedar together with 35 other doggies they rescued from one shelter.
The Petersons were overjoyed upon seeing Cedar once again. It was almost two years since the dog was stolen. They said that their pet is improving and getting better every day. When Cedar has fully recovered, they plan to take him swimming in one of the dog beaches.
Cedar’s rescuers said that microchipping pets could lead to a miracle – just like what happened to Cedar.
