Early this month, Ralph Dorn was looking for his six-year-old Goldendoodle, Harley, to call him home since it was already getting late. When he failed to find him in their backyard, he considered looking by the lakeside near their Culpeper, Virginia, home.
He spotted a pup swimming around 200 feet from the shore, towing another animal. The fur dad was understandably confused about the situation until Harley reached dry land and showed him a baby deer. By the looks of it, the fawn was only a few days old.
Ralph was curious to know how it got in the middle of the lake, but fortunately, the Goldendoodle noticed the fawn just in time to save it. Harley then stayed by the little guy’s side, licking it dry and gently nuzzling it. Shortly after the rescue, the mama deer appeared and walked off with her baby.
The fur dad thought it was the end of the story, but apparently, he was wrong. The following morning, he and his wife, Patricia, noticed the same fawn loitering near their yard. Harley seemed to sense it, too, as he became restless, seemingly eager to greet his friend.
When Ralph opened the door, the canine rushed to the fawn and wagged his tail at him. They then touched each other’s noses before the baby deer left with its mom again. The fur dad couldn’t help but gush at Harley’s two adorable encounters with the fawn, but he didn’t find it surprising.
Even as a puppy, the Goldendoodle had always been kind-hearted towards everyone. He loved playing with Ralph’s four grandkids and was best friends with the family cat. Harley also worked as a certified therapy dog, sitting with children at the local library and visiting elderly care facilities.
That was why when Ralph saw how careful and gentle he was with the fawn, he knew it was only natural for a sweet and good-natured dog like him. Watch Harley’s story here.
