Nick Hayworth is a fisherman based in San Diego, California. He has a fishing boat and is frequently joined by his pet dog whenever he goes fishing.
Luna, the one-year-old German Shepherd, is a natural swimmer. She adores the ocean and enjoys accompanying her owner to the beach.
Nick’s biggest nightmare came true during one of their fishing trips. One moment, Luna was on the stern of a boat, and when the fisherman turned around, he saw that she was suddenly gone.
He began searching for her, but could not find Luna. He even turned off the engine in the hopes that he would hear his dog barking. But he heard nothing.
Nick’s boat was two miles off an island off the coast of San Diego. The island was actually a naval base for the United States Navy. The concerned dog owner radioed the Navy for assistance. In addition, he informed them that his dog was an excellent swimmer, and there was a possibility that she had swam towards the island.
The following two days were spent searching for the dog. With each passing hour, their hopes of finding her alive went down. And on day three, Nick returned home deeply saddened because they didn’t find Luna.
Some Navy personnel continued to search for Luna on their island, but after a week of futile efforts, they proclaimed Luna to be lost at sea and presumed dead.
The Navy personnel returning to the facility five weeks after the dog fell overboard were astonished to see a dog walking down a road. They pulled over and observed that the dog matched Luna’s description. They called Nick immediately.
Since Nick was out of town, his best friend rushed to the base immediately to confirm that the dog was actually Luna. Except for minor weight loss, she was in generally good health. It was really Luna!
Nick and the Navy troops were relieved that Luna had been found and was finally reunited with her owner.
