Hansel was scheduled for euthanasia, but he was rescued and placed in a K9 training program, thanks to the intervention of a concerned individual. At present, he is enjoying his finest life as a fire detection dog.
Hansel had a difficult life. He is a pit bull that was mistreated in a Canadian dogfighting ring. Hansel was slated for euthanasia because of Ontario’s ban on pit bulls. Thanks to a man named Rob Scheinberg, the court’s judgment was reversed, and Hansel and numerous other dogs were saved.
The dog was transferred from a shelter in Florida to the Throw Away Dogs Project in Philadelphia. This group prepares rescue canines for careers as K9 Officers.
To be ready for his role, Hansel underwent a year of training at Throw Away Dogs Project to become an arson detection canine. This intelligent dog aced his training and was placed on active service with the Millville Fire Department.
Hansel was the first dog of his breed to be certified as an arson detection dog. His primary responsibility is to identify flammable liquids such as fuel and gasoline. Hansel takes his job seriously and is dedicated to preventing fires in his town.
Hansel not only landed a job, but also discovered his greatest friend in his handler, firefighter Tyler Van Leer. According to Tyler, he and Hansel are virtually inseparable. They do everything together, whether they are on duty or simply having fun during their free time.
While on the job, Hansel appears serious, though he is actually a very sociable dog. He really loves it when he meets new people and spends time with children. Also, he is a puppy at heart and would never refuse a game of fetch.
Tyler is pleased to be Hansel’s handler and closest friend. This dog is very important to both him and the fire service department.
The Hero Dog Awards have named Hansel the 2021 Law Enforcement and Detection Hero Dog.
Hansel has discovered his life’s purpose, which is to serve and defend the community. He clearly deserves all the admiration and praise he receives.
